Bird Flu (H5N1): Summary of WHO Recommendations for Reducing Risk of Transmission to Humans
- All individuals involved in culling operations should be attired appropriately (face mask, boots, goggles, protective clothing and gloves). Detailed measures should be instituted to prevent possible virus carriage out
of affected farms e.g. disinfecting boots, disposal of protective gear and personal hygiene.
- All staff involved in direct contact with the affected farms should be given influenza vaccination for the current recommended strains.
- Influenza surveillance should be strengthened and periodic prompt analysis should be done at district levels to detect abnormal trends early.
- Front line health staff with possible contact with high risk patients should be given influenza vaccination as soon as possible.
- Universal precautions for handling patients suspected with atypical pneumonia as had been practised for SARS.
- Increased vigilance of doctors / paramedics screening patients especially in inquiring for recent international travel and occupational exposure to poultry.
